DIFF: Thursday Picks

by Stephen Becker 7 Apr 2011 7:57 AM

Today’s picks include the aftermath of a tragedy, a behind the scenes look at John Mellencamp and one for the kids.

CTA TBD

Beautiful Boy – Michael Sheen and Maria Bello play the parents of an 18-year-old who shoots up a school before taking his own life. How does a marriage survive a tragedy? If you’ve seen similarly themed films (Rabbit Hole, In the Bedroom), you know it’s not easy. (7:30 p.m., Angelika)

How to Train Your Dragon – Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders are the recipients of this year’s Tex Avery Animation Award. In their honor, the festival will screen their Oscar-nominated film from last year, with DeBlois in the house for a Q&A. And as a bonus, it’s all free. (4:30 p.m., Angelika)

It’s About You – John Mellencamp rolled through town recently for a show at the Verizon Theatre to play songs off his new album, No Better Than This. This documentary captures the creation of that album, as well as the tour that inspired it. Keep an eye out for Fort Worth’s T Bone Burnett, who produced the album. (7:15 p.m., Angelika)
