Tuesday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 1 Mar 2011 7:58 AM

Today in the roundup: A new music store in Denton, a FW band loves its mom and Douglas Carter Beane to the rescue.

CTA TBD

LISTEN UP: If you’re heading to the 35 Conferette next weekend, a bonus musical discovery awaits you – a new record store. Mad World Records plans to be open by then on Denton’s Courthouse Square. Like Good Records in Dallas, Mad World will also host in-store performances. And as owner Mark Burke tells DC9 at Night, the store is hiring.

HELPS IS ON THE WAY: On April 20, Sister Act will join the long line of movies that have become Broadway shows (in fairness, that parade goes the other way, too). And with about six weeks or so before opening, Douglas Carter Beane has been brought in to work on the show’s book. If that name sounds familiar, he’s the same guy who wrote Give It Up!, which debuted last year at the Dallas Theater Center. “If you’re raised Methodist, Catholicism is a bit of a workout,” Beane tells nytimes.com. “It’s sort of like you’re up, you’re down, you’re up, you’re down. It’s a continual hokey-pokey.”

WHAT’S IN A NAME: In a move sure to make any mom swoon, Fort Worth band Oh Whitney named itself after lead singer Peter More’s mother. And they had good reason to – the band lives in her house.  “She provides us room and board. She’s eccentric and artistic and wonderful. We couldn’t do this without her,” lead guitarist Will Arnold tells fwweekly.com. Note to band: Mother’s Day is May 8.
