Today in the roundup: A scintillating Cinderella, music bits and the end of an era in Wills Point.

CTA TBD

SCINTILLATING CINDERELLA: Texas Ballet Theater opened its season over the weekend at the Winspear Opera House with what sounds like a top-notch reading of Cinderella. “From the elaborate sets to the fantastical costumes – Cinderella’s bejeweled pointe shoes, the Stepsisters’ yards of tulle, and the horses’ silvery, flowing manes – artistic director Ben Stevenson’s take on the classical narrative transformed the Winspear Opera House and took the audience on a romantic journey,” writes Art&Seek guest blogger Danielle Georgiou in her dallasnews.com review. Meanwhile, Margaret Putnam says the performance, “fulfilled everyone’s ideal of a fairy tale ballet,” in her theaterjones.com review. The good news for you: TBT takes Cinderella to Bass Hall at the end of this month.

MUSIC BITS: The Burning Hotels have released a cool video for their song “Allison.” (dfw.com) … The Old 97’s have released the title track from their upcoming album, The Grand Theatre, as a free download. (DC9 at Night) … The Wall Street Journal is wondering if the career-launching role of piano competitions like the Cliburn is changing. (wsj.com)

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW: From the sad news file, the owner of the Majestic Theatre in Wills Point tells dallasnews.com that he’s closing the historic building today. The theater opened in 1926, but a decline in business lead to its shuttering.
