Friday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 1 Oct 2010 7:56 AM

Today in the roundup: The best of Forth Worth, Shrek shines and theater and photography talk.

CTA TBD

THE BEST OF THE BEST: A week ago today, we pointed you to the Dallas Observer‘s Best of Dallas list, which gave big ups to KXT 91.7 FM and Paul Slavens, among many others. And this week, we direct your attention to Fort Worth Weekly‘s Best of 2010 list. Among the artsy types recognized are Todd Hart (best actor), Cheryl Tyre (best actress) and Fort Worth Opera (best performing arts organization).

JOLLY GREEN GIANT: Shrek the Musical opened on Wednesday for its State Fair run. And Lawson Taitte says it’s worth a shot. “Josh Prince’s gotta-have-a- gimmick choreography is consistently entertaining, especially the dancing rats and blind mice. Alan Mingo Jr.’s genuinely funny and soulful Donkey stands out in the uniformly excellent touring cast,” he writes in his dallasnews.com review. If you decide to go, pay special attention to Shrek’s father. He’s played by Dallas actor Brian Gonzales, who spoke recently with theaterjones.com.

DOUBLE SHOT: The This Week in the Arts podcast has a pair of offerings this week. First, Susan Sargeant talks about the pair of Edward Albee plays that Wingspan Theatre is producing. Then Amon Carter Museum Assistant Curator of Photography Jessica May discusses “American Modern: Abbott, Evans, Bourke-White,” which opens on Saturday.
