I am ready to receive your transmission

Warren Zevon is still a seminal favorite here. A classical prodigy that was mentored by Igor Stravinsky (and basically eschewed ‘dead man music’), directed the Everly Brothers in their later days and was an associate of Paul Shafer (filling in on his vacations.)

The hits were cute/great – Excitable Boy, Werewolves…, but then the slide happens into Mohammed’s Radio, LGM, The French Inhaler, Carmelita and the list goes on. Gridlock (from Transverse City) features Jorma Koukonen and Jack Cassidy (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) and is an incident occuring here any given day.

For that reason I ride a bike. Oh, and by the way – best WZ comment – “I got to be Jim Morrison longer than he did”. Refers to getting laid, check out wikipedia.

    Hello from Missouri-

“Coming Home” by Joanne Shaw Taylor http://www.last.fm/music/Joanne%2520Shaw%2520Taylor?ac=joanne%20shaw

“Midnight Train To Memphis” by The Steeldrivers
    http://www.last.fm/music/The%2520Steeldrivers?ac=steeldrivers

    “Unbroken” by Carolyn Wonderland

I saw The Steeldrivers perform live at the historic Rodgers Theater in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Their fine picking echoed through the old theater like a scene out of O Brother, Where Art Thou?. They were great. The lead singer has a very distinctive and beguiling singing voice and writes most of their music. I saw Carolyn Wonderland and her band perform sitting down at Fuzzy’s Taco in Denton, Texas last spring. I was so taken with her and her musicianship that I didn’t mind leaning against a trash receptacle for her show. Good program, Paul. Peace and love to Texas. Go ‘Boys.

  • Anne Bothwell

Ted Hawkins! Covering my favorite Webb Pierce song, (also on a short-list of my fave country songs.) Thanks Paul.

  • Phil Sweren

Concider the Source is playin at Cool Beans tonite for the 4th time in 3 years! One of Alt. Press’ top unsigned bands. They’re a 3 pc insturmental group from NYC with a loyal and growing fan base in lil d. If you go to their website you can get their CDs which would be an awesome addition to the PSS lineup. If you haven’t seen a Concider the Source show, you wouldn’t believe it was only 3 dudes playing!

  • Regan

    Ba Moin un Tibo, Doudou

  • Cliff

That thing you just played before the Billie Holliday was turbo awesome.

Here’s a suggestion for a future show: “All Come True” by World Party. I remember this one when it was new, how it sounded kind of exotic and distant and from some other time. (Now, it actually is.)

As for Phish, if you haven’t already, check out “It’s Ice” or “Mound” from the album Rift. Those might be your kind of thing.

(Okay, maybe Rift is out of print. I didn’t find it for download at Amazon. So, no link. Whatever.)

  • Paul Slavens

why are they playin cool beans, I mean, no bad trips to the old Library (it is a very historical venue, played some of my first gigs there) but its not a great place to build a musical following.

  • Paul Slavens

    thanks for writing y’all
    add on during the week
I will see yaz next sunday

  • Phil Sweren

They played cool beans bc they don’t charge a door. They played at boiler room last nite and have played both back to back most of the times they come thru town. They consistantly pack the roof and do their best to tear it down, and usually come close. Enemies hosted a private house party once and so they played 3 packed shows that week.
