Wednesday Morning Roundup

by Stephen Becker 25 Aug 2010 7:48 AM

Today in the roundup: A sweet new local music video, words from Mama and a special incentive.

CTA TBD

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA: In February, Smile Smile gathered a bunch of its friends and took over the Rachofsky House on Preston Road to shoot the video for the title track of its new album, Truth on Tape. The result debuted on Tuesday. DC9 at Night has more details on how this inventive, artsy video came to be. See how many familiar faces you can pick out in the crowd.

MAMA SAYS: On Saturday, Vicki Lawrence is coming to Casa Manana, and she’s bringing an old friend – Mama. The comedian and her most famous character will be the guests of honor at Casa’s “Laugh with a Legend Gala” fundraiser. “Mama is my chance to be like Chris Rock. I get to come out and say everything I would like to say, everything that we’re all thinking, but it’s too politically incorrect and we would never say it. But Mama can say it because she’s a crazy old lady,” she tells dallasnews.com. Lawrence also spoke recently with theaterjones.com, expounding on her career and how she still keeps in touch with Carol Burnett.

TODAY IS THE DAY: And finally, a friendly reminder that (drum roll …) the very first Art&Seek e-newsletter goes out today! (confetti.) If you’re a regular reader of this space, you probably want to sign up for it. In addition to keeping you up to date on all things arts in North Texas, it’ll have lots and lots o’ giveaways. In fact, Newsletter No. 1 will have a chance to win a membership to the Nasher Sculpture Center as well as tickets to a couple of performances at the AT&T Performing Arts Center. But you can’t win unless you sign up. Check those inboxes this afternoon for your first issue.
