    Dear Mr. Slavens,
I was wondering if you could play some of the Brother Machine. He’s out of Austin, and is a great musician, as well as a great guy, but he has absolutely no idea how to make a good martini. I don’t remember him putting anything out in a while, but if you could play something off No Home In This World it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

    • I will look and see if he has some downloadable music.
      thanks

Hey there! Nice start to the Easter show! Just wonderingthough, Paul: Can you tell me and everyone else why you deleted my response to your comment last week that my taste in music ‘barfed you out’? I just don’t like being censored, especially when I’m being polite and the censorship makes you look better. So, any explanation? Thanks for letting me know! Oh, and happy Easter to you, too!

    • yeah, I heard about that after the fact. I dont moderate the responses, it is done by someone else at the station.
My friend, sorry if I was less than polite in my response, I answer these things pretty quickly and in some cases , obviously a bit to thoughtlessly. It was certainly not my intent to insult you. If we didnt share a lot of tastes in music you probably wouldnt listen to the show.
And polite disagreement on musical taste is a wonderful thing.
Easter, a wonderful day for forgiveness, I hope you will extend some to me.
      cheers.

Given you opened tonight’s show with “Road to Nowhere” then “I Zimbra” shortly thereafter, I remembered an interview I’d just seen at CNN with David Byrne. He said, regarding the need for lyrics to make sense, “…it’s the sound of the words, the inflection and the way the song is sung and the way it fits the melody and the way the syllables are on the tongue that has as much of the meaning as the actual, literal words”.

    Cheers!

    • that is exactly how I feel about lyrics.
I understand how important they are to lots of people, and there are some lyrics that really make the song for me.
but I tend to listen to music as music and often dont know or care what they are saying.
      but that is just me
thanks for tuning in and conversating.

Okay, I probably should have added a link to the website since no one has probably heard of him (brother machine). So, here it is.

How do I get audio for this show? Anybody?

    • are you talking about downloading a podcast or archive of shows?
if so you are out of luck
sorry. its appointment radio for the foreseeable future.
      : (

  • Ron, are you on KXT.org? If you go to http://www.KXT.org and click in “Listen Live” on the right hand side of the screen, it’ll pull up a screen — just underneath “KXT WORLDWIDE” click “play”…..

  • Ron Bulla

Hello Paul and neighbors to the south, I found the audio! It’s been awhile. My last tune in was on a different radio station. Sounds just as great here. My suggestions: Joanne Shaw Taylor “Going Home”. Steeldrivers “Blue Side of the Mountain”. Charlie Rich “Mohair Sam”. Thanks for the help, Cindy. Nice to hear your voice after my many months absence, Paul. I’ll work on getting you links for the songs. Peace.

    • yep, there are still some folks out there who missed the switch back in November, glad to have you back.

  • Mike W

I think See Line Woman is an old folk song. I heard Feist do it live and she told a story about she and her sisters singing it when they were kids. Nina Simone did a version of it also.

    • FAR OUT
I will definitely find that Nina recording
      you rawk

  • B L Zebubba

OK – here’s one for you: the Andalucian Dogs with Dawn Upshaw singing “My Eyes Weep” from “Ayre ” by Golijov (on Deutsche Grammophon: B0004782).

Another work from that same recording that sounds interesting would be a Sardinian tune, “Tancas seradas a muru”; I don’t believe you’ve ever played any Sardinian music on your show, so it would seem you owe us.

You can read about and purchase these tunes and others from the recording at this blurb (actually it’s more of a dissertation, but anyway): http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/main.jsp;jsessionid=D3A87166231A3E51FAE76D752CB6B33E

And if it turns out that, ultimately, my recommendations herein “barf [you] out”, go ahead and tell me – I can take it, and I’ll still listen to your show (as well as these tunes, to my heart’s content).

    • B L Zebubba

Hmmm … something messed up: that link in my immediately-previous post isn’t complete, and the catalog number is incorrect. After you get to the page that appears after clicking the link, enter this correct catalog number, 000478202, in the search field on the bottom left. That should get you to the right place to read more and purchase the CD if you so decide, which I highly recommend.

So much for posting a link…ha. Great show.

  • well its the thought that counts
and I have not played any Sardinian music
    although it sounds kinda fishy
    that was a joke.

  • B L Zebubba

What’s playin’ now – though I’ve never heard it before, it’s gotta be Elvis. I’ve been tryin’ to tell people: not all of Elvis is awful.

  • there is a lot of elvis that isnt awful, Im not even sure what elvis IS awful.
maybe some of the movie stuff, but not all of it

  • B L Zebubba

That pun on “Sardinian” barfed me out.

  • Cari

I love your show. I wish there was a “real-time” playlist, like radioparadise.com.

    Love this piano!

  • Cari

Oh my goodness!! I have been smiling for a long time now! Thank you!

    yee haw

  • B L Zebubba

Please be advised: if it turns out that you do in fact like the Andalucian Dogs and play them on your show, then you will have made a deal with me. And, as everyone knows, I always get my due. So, what do I demand in return? In exchange for my turning you on to the Andalucian Dogs you, J Paul Slavens, must play on your show … “No More, No More”, by H Tim Sorea (available here on “Super Audio CD”: http://www.amazon.com/Toys-Attic-Aerosmith/dp/B0000CF30C/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1270435823&sr=1-24

    OK?

  • wish i could have the playlist on before the show, but its a no no.
    sorry.

  • Zach Balch! He is a singer songwriter originally from Denton that now lives in Austin and works for the Recording Academy. He is one of my favorites! You can buy songs on iTunes or listen to his music on his website.

I will see you all here next week, I will bring the braunschweiger.
