The funding source for the large-scale National Bible Museum that may be built in downtown Dallas is Hobby Lobby president Steve Green. Oklahoma’s KOTV reports that Hobby Lobby has purchased one of the oldest complete manuscript copies of the Bible, the sixth-century, Codex Climaci Rescriptus, written in Palestinian Aramaic. It was put up for auction at Sotheby’s by the previous owner, Westminster College, Cambridge.

“We are committed to preserving the history of our faith and excited about the opportunity to share our collection with others through the development of the National Bible Museum,” said Steve Green, president of Hobby Lobby. …

Our goal is to acquire a site in a major metropolitan area that will allow visitors from around the world to enjoy the collections housed in the museum and participate in special educational programs,” Green said.

“We are looking for at least 300,000 square feet of space and ample parking and have been evaluating various opportunities, including several in the Dallas area.”

No definite word on any of the Dallas sites, but Unfair Park reports that the group did speak to the city of Dallas two years ago about possibly using Reunion Arena.

  • This is excellent news for Aramaic students and Bible students alike. It shows just how early the Aramaic copies of the Bible are. Not many Bible students today realize that complete copies of the Bible in Aramaic go back to the sixth century, and those are actually *dated* Aramaic manuscripts, so there is no doubt about their age.
