THE YEAR IN ARCHITECTURE: With no full-time architecture critic at either of our major metros, the Dallas Center for Architecture is filling the void with a compilation of year-end lists from critics around the country. The DCA blog is less than a year old, so the bloggers there felt it was a bit too young to do a local list. But one is promised for next year.

THE YEAR IN LOCAL MUSIC: Quick has pieced together lists of the best local songs of ’09 and the best local albums of ’09. … DC9 at Night should wrap up its countdown of The Best Songs in Dallas Music, 2009, today. Teenage Cool Kids’ “Foreign Lands” checked in at No. 2 on Wednesday. … Fort Worth Weekly widens its scope to look at the best 817 music of the decade. Lots of currently great bands and some no-longer-with-us bands on that list. … DFW.com’s Preston Jones calls Telegraph Canyon’s The Tide and the Current the best local album of the year.

QUOTABLE: “$100 a night. Actually, it has gone up because one of the makeup tubes used to be $4, and now it’s $9. So, it’s probably more like $170 a night.”

Kurt Kleinmann, to theaterjones.com, on how much he spends a night in makeup for the cast of one of his “Living Black and White” mystery plays. The current show, Death Express!, opened this week.

  • This list of bests is IMO much better and more original.

It recognizes that the internet is the world’s first world jukebox. It is the first list of the best of that jukebox, it does NOT limit itself to any region, any type of music, or any language, etc. It is NOT promoted by any mainstream media or corporate sponsor. It is truly the first all world music and video list with almost 200 hit songs you’ve probably never heard.. Compare this to any you see anywhere. And that goes for a year from now. See who’s list holds up.
