Play some Eaton Lake Tonics from Fort Worth. Something from the upcoming album (Track 1 has a bad word in it)! 🙂

  • jeff ryan

i love that u’re going to play the clientele.
    perfect man. can’t wait.

  • Chuck

Hey Paul. I’m a new listener to the show so I’m not sure if you’ve played Blitzen Trapper. I’d love to hear “Furr” though. You can hear it and others at http://www.myspace.com/blitzentrapper

    Thanks!

    • have not played that group . thanks a whole bunch

    • Great suggestion, I love that tune! Also, I humbly request

      Animal Collective, My Girls
      Anything by Cat Power

So, I know an amazing artist called Geoffry Castle out of Seattle. He is a violinist and he absolutely rocks. His music needs to be shared with the world. The Cd called New World is my favorite.

  • playing some Eaton lake, noone hates you jenny
is that the track with the bad word? YIKES!!!!

  • Russ

Wow, whatever’s playing now is cool.

Almost anything from the “Once” soundtrack would be nice. “Gold” is good. They’re making a sequel, but are stuck on a good title.

Hey – Suzanne! Strangest lyrics ever!

  • Suzanne

Hey Paul. I’ve missed your show for the past coupla weeks. 🙁

So, why can’t you post the set list pre-show any longer?

So, I get in my car, leaving my girlfriend’s house a few minutes ago, and what do I hear?

“Suzanne” (although not Cohen), from the top.

    You made my night!

  • kumar

Hey Paul can you play that song ‘we did not start the fire ‘ by Billy Joel

    • it turns out that I really dislike Billy Joel.
      but for you, maybe.
but it might not be that song.
      but it might.

  • Philip

I already requested it, but I’m gonna request it a second time ’cause you never played it (not sure why), and (I think) it’s a great song:

“America (feat. Mos Def & Chali 2na)” by K’naan, album: Troubador.

lyrics and song can be found here:
    http://www.museke.com/en/node/3405

A clean version is available on iTunes. It only has one minor cuss word though (I’m not sure what’s acceptable on the radio).

I won’t take it personally if you choose not to play it though.

    Thanks, Paul
    great show tonight (as always).

    • yeah , I seem to remember checking the lyrics and passing on it
I will see if I can find the clean version
      cheers

  • $|_!>

How about playing some of these tracks:

    VNV Nation – Carbon

    Beborn Beton – Sleeping Beauty

    Assemblage 23 – Ground

    Apoptygma Berzerk – Non-Stop Violence

    Covenant – Brave New World

    Neuroticfish – The Bomb

Wolfsheim – Leave No Dead Undone

    • almost played some Covenant this week
calling the ships to port or something like that
I will get it on for sure next week
      cheers

  • Suzanne

I knew I liked you, Paul. I’m not a Billy Joel fan either! 😉

Ever heard of the world music band Ekova? French based, world music trio. The album Heaven’s Dust is a particular stand out.

  • Is this Fiona Apple playing right now?

  • Davis

    Hey Paul!
I missed a couple of Sundays.
It’s good to be back home.
I’ve caught an endless amount of hell for liking Neil Young!
Ever since “For What It’s Worth”.
Thanks for playing that song… and check out the “Heart of Gold” video.
Shawn Phillips, Kate Bush, Blind Faith, and Timmy Thomas are my suggestions for tonight.
    Onward with style.
    d.

    • these are all groovy suggestions,
timmy thomas is the only one I havent heard of
      cool

    • Dan

I agree with the Blind Faith. “Can’t Find My Way Home.”

  • Ron Bulla

“Oops I Did It Again” by Britney Spe…….actually, by Louis Armstrong. Except for the reference to the Lindberg baby in the song, I think the lyrics are the same. Even considering the amount of borrowing, stealing and sampling in modern music, this still had me mumbling “how weird is that?”. Even weirder, the words Armstrong shouts out about the baby in the song. Here are some music suggestions: Anything by The Delta 72. “I Get By” by Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives. And lastly, by Naked Eyes “Promises Promises” the acoustic version from the new album called Fumbling With The Covers. Paul, the show is fantastic! Each week, I keep waiting for a drop-off in the quality of the songs played. It has yet to happen in my humble opinion. I am perpetually impressed by this program. Thanks.

    • its not me
its folks like you who make great suggestions
I find out new music every week
      that keeps it fresh
thanks though, I will try to keep it up

  • Regan

Thanks for los lobos. Would you play something by the plugz?

  • Tim

    Hi Paul,
Here are three for you: ” Martha’s Tacos” by Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs, Joe Strummer, “Leopardskin Limousines’ off the album Earthquake Weather and” Calling All Cardinals” by the Chronics. Thanks for playing Eilen Jewell.
    TK

    • am I gonna be able to find that bacon music online?
      in any case thanks

  • Regan

Thanks for the Los Lobos. Would you play something by the Plugz.

  • daniel

Any reason you can’t pre-post your setlist anymore? I really liked being able to follow along and refer to it when you played soemthing I liked but wasn’t familiar with. This is an unfortunate restriction, and I disapprove! BTW, play some SOULHAT!!!

    Cheers!

  • Dan

Thanks for playing the Weill. “Pirate Jenny” has always been one of my favorite songs from The Threepenny Opera. One of these days for sh*ts and giggles, you should play it auf Deutsch sung by Lotte Lenya.

Some Tom Waits may also be in order.

    Keep those excellent tunes coming.

  • Cliff

I just went to http://www.kera.org/ and pledged to help support the great music we hear on 90.1 at Night! Who else is with me?

  • Tim

Since Dan was thinking about Tom Waits, how about the John Hammond version of Waits’ “Shore Leave” off the album Wicked Grin?
(I think that album is all Tom Waits covers)

  • Brooke Bolander

I’m going to make a weird suggestion here and stick up a link for the band Halfwise, who, as far as I’m aware, didn’t make it beyond the Edinburgh, Scotland folk scene and one album before breaking up. But WHAT a one album. I’m not sure how many copies are floating about, but it’s definitely worth a listen.

    http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=605419

Standouts: Rum Baba, Spring Tide II, Twenty-Ninth of Feb’rary. Excellent stuff if you’re into weird folky fusion … things.

  • sorry I am not responding to more comments tonite, having some browser problems on my end.
I will look into all these excellent suggestions
Tom Waits is one of those artists that I am always afraid I overplay
but thats because he is so good

  • “hatari” by tune yards. thanks for all you do.

  • So, recently I had reason to look up ol’ Mamie Van Doren on the web. The blurb on her at Wikipedia says “In the film ‘Untamed Youth’ in 1957, [Ms. Van Doren] was the first woman to sing rock-and-roll in a Hollywood musical (Eddie Cochran did the music for the film).”

Well, if Wikipedia says so, it must be true, so how ’bout it – how about playing us some Mamie Van Doren from “Untamed Youth”? I recommend “Salamander”, which I remember piqued my interest when I caught this wonderfully trashy movie accidently somewhere on late-night cable a few years ago (unfortunately the only recording of it I can come up with at the moment is here – it will at least give you some idea of what to be on the lookout for, and what your listeners have been missing since I bet you’ve never played her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3ye-a-r0Ok.

  • Russ

Funny, got the DVD “Theremin” right here but haven’t played it yet. It’s a doco on the inventor, Leon Theremin. Poor guy was kidnapped by the KGB and forced to work on spy stuff, but luckily after he invented the Theremin.

Wild night tonight! One of your best!

  • greg metz

thanks for the van dyke parks!
punky likes dan hick and his hot licks!!!!
    gm
    come to our happening!

  • Mike W

oh man! Geri Allen/Charlie Haden/Paul Motian one of the great piano trios ever

  • Philip

Ooh! One more to recommend if I may. Play “Supercapitalism” by Wynton Marsalis from the album From The Plantation to the Penitentiary. It’s a little over 6 min long though, so I don’t know if you can fit it.

  • Steve

    Paul,

Here’s an interesting track – “I Love How You Love Me” by the Babys, from their eponymous first album. Not many rock bands would cover something like this, especially on a debut album.

  • wow, a theramin doc
I would like to see that
havent heard of mamie van doren

  • Mike W

Hey Paul, think you could play something by local trumpet great Dennis Gonzalez? Might be hard to find a shorter tune that would fit on the radio but I think he has a few cuts that would work.

  • as usual you came through with great suggestions
I will be busy again this week trying to lay hands on it
    and ears too!

have a great week and feel free to come back and post more suggestions here or email them to me at [email protected]

    gnite

  • And while we’re in the vicinity of my perpetually-adolescent fantasies, you could do far worse than playing us some vintage sixties/seventies Joey Heatherton, such as the following delightful musical number: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnO8aIf2fco.

While I was too young to appreciate Ms. Heatherton when she was in her then-current prime as an it-girl, the video I just referenced’ll give you a good idea of what the fuss was about.

She also put at least one album (the original-vinyl art for which I highly recommend); take your pick of the twenty-one tracks it contains: http://www.amazon.com/Joey-Heatherton-Album/dp/B000BPL1HU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1255920529&sr=8-1.

  • Russ

    “Theremin” doco is on Netflix.

  • And lastly, please play us some Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66.

  • Set list is up! Thanks Paul, and thanks to all the folks who commented tonight.

  • Herb Levy

Heard the Scott Johnson/Kronos track in the car; unfortunately the only place I hear the station. You might find other Johnson things to be interesting; he has a couple of discs that have been re-issued on Tzadik.

&, yeah, if there’s some Dennis Gonzalez that can fit your time constraints, bring it on!

Thanks as always for the music, even when I don’t hear it.

  • Lawrence Sutherland

    Hey, Paul~

you’ve received a good deal of suggestions, but here’s mine for the pile. It’s the semi-scary month of October, so I thought you might be able to play “Clear” by Sigmund Und Sein Freund. Thank you for having previously played The Devils!

    Have a good show.
