TREES SPROUTS AGAIN: Tonight’s the big night – the reopening of Trees in Deep Ellum. The Playlist blog has a rundown of who’s playing this weekend, as well as a link to a Dallas Morning News story about the club from June. And the club isn’t slowing down much after the weekend, as shows seem to be booked just about every night from here to October. If you’re headed out there tonight, let’s all pray that this doesn’t happen again.

REMEMBERING PRESTON JONES: Thirty years ago this summer, Dallas Theater Center staged Preston Jones’ last work, Remember. The play was a hit, but Jones wouldn’t live to reap its rewards as he died suddenly shortly after. Jones’ nephew Trey Birkhead remembers his uncle in this loving tribute on theaterjones.com. The cast that assembled to perform Jones’ The Oldest Living Graduate at SMU the year after his death is pretty amazing.

SCORE ONE FOR 508 PARK: Unfair Park has been closely following the future of 508 Park, the historic building where Robert Johnson recorded some of the most important songs in blues history. In a nutshell, some people want to see the building torn down to make room for new development while others want to preserve it. The preservationists scored a major victory on Wednesday night as the Landmark Commission’s Central Business District Task Force denied a request to demolish the building. For a primer on the building’s significance, spend some time with this Observer story from January.

ETC.: DC 9 at Night has posted its latest DC9 in Space video, this time featuring Robert Gomez (DC9 at Night) … Actress Lorca Simons, the spawn of Hip Pocket Theatre founders Johnny and Diane Simons, waxes poetic about growing up around the theater in the newest This Week in the Arts podcast (thisweekinthearts.com) … Rhett Miller tells CNN why he loves Twitter so much (anyone who subscribes to his Twitter feed knows he really likes it). If Million-Dollar Gumby, DART’s Deep Ellum Gateway sculpture, is any indication of the respect we in Dallas will pay our historic districts, it does not bode well for an individual building like 508 Park.

My gut tells me it all comes down to what looks good to outsiders or to people we hope will invest in our real estate. Why else would they have created a 4-story cartoon character as the gravestone for such a rich cultural legacy? Until convinced otherwise, that’s my opinion, as ranted about here:
