Guest blogger Danielle Marie Georgiou is a Dance Lecturer at the University of Texas at Arlington where she serves as the Assistant Director of the UT Arlington’s Dance Ensemble. She is also a member of Muscle Memory Dance Theatre – a modern dance collective. Danielle is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Arts and Humanities at UT Dallas, and her first book, The Politics of State Public Arts Funding, is out now.

This Friday through Saturday, the Bath House Cultural Center and CD/FW (Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth) will present the 8th Annual Barefoot Brigade Dance Festival.  Since 2001, the Festival has set out to improve exposure, accessibility and economics for modern dance by creating a coalition of professionals and enthusiasts.  The festival’s base has multiplied over the years to now include artists from all over Texas such as the Armstrong/Bergeron Dance Company (College Station), Mary Lynn Babcock (Denton) and Phase 2 Dance Ensemble (Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston).

The Bath House is home to many of Dallas’ finest professional, community theater and performing art companies and gives them a place to present some of the most original and avant-garde pieces the city has to offer.  This weekend’s performance will definitely add to that tradition.

As a dancer with Muscle Memory Dance Theatre (performing Saturday night and Sunday afternoon) I can give you a little taste of what you will soak up.  We will be presenting a piece by company member Meghan Cardwell-Wilson entitled “Saturation” (part of a longer work, Breaking News, that recently premiered at the Out of the Loop Festival in Addison).  The piece examines the overwhelming stimulation effect of the media.  From the radio to the TV to the Internet, we are inundated with headlines and sound bites that sensationalize national and world events.  And as a consumer-driven culture that just buys buys buys, we can’t help but soak it all up.  So we might as well tune in, tune out and sip our Big Gulps.

From experiencing the works of the other performers — including, Armstrong/Bergeron Dance Company, Beckles Dancing Company, CD/FW, and Dallas Black Dance Theatre II — I know that the show will be one not to be missed.  If you are looking for a different view on the world around us, come out to the Bath House. Have a little fun, get a little wet, enjoy yourself.
