Some of history’s great authors, including Joyce, Faulkner and Orwell, have had their books banned at one time or another. Included in that group is John Steinbeck, whose Pulitzer Prize-winner The Grapes of Wrath was banned in parts of California for making farm owners look bad. (It should be noted that those same farm owners were keen to keep the book out of the hands of their workers, who would surely see themselves in the book.) Rick Wartzman, author of Obscene in the Extreme: The Burning and Banning of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, recently discussed the topic of banned books with Think host Krys Boyd.
