Catty-corner from the downtown Wortham Center, the Houston Ballet is planning a new, $53 million home. It will house its offices, rehearsal space and the Ben Stevenson Academy, the ballet’s educational wing, named for its long-time artistic director — who is now the head of the Texas Ballet Theater. Plans call for a skywalk to connect the building with the city-owned Wortham, where the Houston Ballet presents six programs a year, plus a month-long run of The Nutcracker.

  • This idea of a separate home for the ballet in Houston or any big city, seems to me to be outdated. It also seems very Ivory-tower-ish. Better to have a single all arts center where among all the weekly performances of all types of art, there are many dance programs from all kinds of city dance troupes.
I say its the duty of our government; whether city, state, or national, to supply the building And then I say they should go away, and allow the people of that city to determine their arts for their art center.
That means no separate art buildings for dance, symphony, art, music, etc. Instead I suggest either art centers built all over the city, or one main art center, or a combination of both.
It also means the government should get out of the art review business, and stop rewarding some art groups but not others. Instead build the art centers, then leave the rest to the community the art center is in.
